Promissory Contract and/ or Sales Contract?

In order to buy a property in Portugal you will usually come upon the two contractual stages of the transaction: Promissory Contract (Contrato de promessa de compra e venda) and the Final Deed (Escritura) - the final Sales Contract (Contrato de compra e venda).

If you are ready to implement the transaction and all requisites are set and properly arranged you can go ahead and sign the Final Deed right away.

Nevertheless, in most cases the transaction does require some further planning and preparation which can take some time. Thus, in Portugal it is common to first sign the Promissory Contract which secures the transaction and outlines the further proceedings.
